However, it’s worth noting that NordVPN’s 2018 server hack remains a point of contention. A single Finnish server was compromised due to a breach at a third-party data center. Although there’s no detailed information about the extent of the breach, it was traced to a compromised account at the data center, which was eventually terminated. Fortunately, NordVPN avoids this problem by automatically redirecting you to a suitable server if it detects P2P traffic. In practice, I haven’t noticed any issues with this functionality.

While the Favorites feature is available, it’s limited to individual servers rather than entire locations. This means if a server goes down or is removed, so does your Favorite setting.

Based in the privacy-friendly British Virgin Islands, ExpressVPN isn’t required to submit data to the UK or US and isn’t part of the 5 Eyes or 14 Eyes alliances. This, along with its clear no-logging policy, makes it a strong choice for privacy-conscious users.

Speed

Connection speeds are crucial for seamless VPN usage, and even privacy-focused users expect fast loading times alongside strong protection. In my tests on a 1Gbps connection, ExpressVPN delivered speeds of around 410Mbps with its Lightway protocol, which is more than adequate for most domestic connections, where the ISP is usually the bottleneck.

OpenVPN speeds were also solid at 210 Mbps, though slightly slower than previous tests. While ExpressVPN isn’t the fastest on the market, with peak speeds in the mid-range, it’s still very reliable.

For example, if you choose an entry server in New York, you’ll be redirected through Hide.me’s network to an exit server in the UK. Hide.me’s app offers extensive depth with support for five protocols (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, SoftEther, SSTP) and a range of configuration options, including IKEv2 stealth mode, custom ports, tunnel via IPv4 or IPv6, and Hide.me’s custom Bolt technology for enhanced speeds.

The app also provides comprehensive IPv6 support, allowing connections via IPv4 only, IPv6 only, or a preference-based fallback system to improve speeds and minimize data leaks.

Advanced features include split tunneling, which lets you choose which apps use the VPN, and a customizable kill switch that can execute scripts to manage apps or perform other actions if the connection drops.

With many features to explore, finding specific settings can be tricky. Fortunately, Hide.me’s app includes a helpful Search box. If you need to adjust the Best Location feature, for example, just type “best” into the Search box. The app will direct you to the correct page and highlight the relevant option, a unique and useful touch we haven’t seen elsewhere.

Streaming and Torrenting

Hide.me excels at streaming, working seamlessly with popular US services like Netflix US, Disney+ US, Amazon Prime US, and Hulu. If you’re located elsewhere, you can also access local streaming sites such as BBC iPlayer.

Hide.me excels at both streaming and torrenting. All servers support P2P traffic, and it performs well with top torrenting apps like uTorrent, where I experienced a 5–10% speed boost with port forwarding. For streaming, hide.me works with major services like Netflix US and Amazon Prime US, making it a strong choice for both activities.

Kill Switch

The Windows app’s kill switch was tested by manually closing WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2 connections. It effectively blocked internet access and reconnected within seconds. However, during location switches, the app occasionally allowed brief periods of unprotected internet access before re-establishing the VPN. While this is unlikely to be a major issue for most users, it could be a concern in highly privacy-sensitive situations.

Performance

VPN speeds were assessed using automated tests across platforms like SpeedTest, Measurement Lab, and Cloudflare.

Hide.me’s results were impressive. With WireGuard, speeds reached a solid 580Mbps, while regular OpenVPN delivered 260Mbps. Using OpenVPN with Hide.me’s Bolt achieved an outstanding 950Mbps.

However, Bolt is exclusive to the Windows app. On other platforms, performance may be more average, though still quite good. For most users, a speed of 580Mbps is more than sufficient.

Safety 

Hide.me is highly secure, fast, and user-friendly, and it supports top streaming services. It offers industry-standard security features, including an independently audited no-logs policy. Advanced security options like full leak protection, SmartGuard, Multihop, perfect forward secrecy, and split tunneling are also included.

Overall, Hide.me is an excellent VPN with only a few minor drawbacks. The desktop apps appear somewhat outdated, and the Windows app has occasional laggy animations. Additionally, while Hide.me has servers in 54 countries—a solid number—most top VPNs cover 70+ countries.

However, its strengths are overshadowed by issues such as a questionable no-logs policy, a sluggish Windows app, and problematic WireGuard implementation, which disables certain features when in use.

With support for up to 10 simultaneous connections, PureVPN stands out among VPNs, which typically average around five connections per account. The service is available on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux, though we advise against using the Linux client due to recent security vulnerabilities. Browser extensions are offered for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, but these extensions generally provide limited additional benefits to the overall VPN experience, and PureVPNs are no exception.

At first glance, PureVPN resembles many of its competitors and doesn’t offer groundbreaking technology. This isn’t a negative; it’s a reflection of the market, where many VPNs share similar features and protocols. Prospective users should consider the company’s practices and customer treatment.

– Impressive server count across various countries, comparable to major players like NordVPN.

– Affordable pricing at $1.89 per month for a two-year standard plan.

DNS Protection Measures

PureVPN’s DNS protection measures are effective. In multiple tests, including those on dnsleaktest.com, PureVPN performed well.

Dedicated IP

PureVPN offers a Dedicated IP add-on, priced at $4.99 per month for monthly plans, $4.79 per month for one-year plans, and $2.49 per month for two-year plans. Although we didn’t test this feature during our review, PureVPN also offers Dedicated Server and Business VPN add-ons. These provide users with a consistent IP address and additional server location options, with Business VPN allowing multiple devices to connect simultaneously.

Kill Switch

PureVPN’s Internet Kill Switch (IKS) functions as expected, cutting off internet traffic when not connected to Wi-Fi, and is easily activated with a click in the settings. There are two modes: Automatic IKS and Manual IKS. However, despite Manual IKS being described as “Customizable IKS Settings for Full Control,” no additional settings are available. Customer support clarified that the difference is that Manual IKS shuts off the internet connection entirely, while Automatic IKS blocks traffic but keeps the internet connected.

Split Tunneling

PureVPN’s split tunneling generally works as expected, routing specific apps through the VPN while others use the regular internet connection. However, this feature is disabled when using the WireGuard protocol. Although the app warns users when WireGuard is set as the preferred protocol, this limitation is significant. WireGuard is widely considered the best VPN protocol and is available on most VPNs. PureVPN’s incomplete implementation leads to issues like this. If split tunneling isn’t crucial for you, this might not be a problem, but the lack of compatibility with the best protocol is a major drawback.

Pricing

PureVPN offers three tiers of plans with monthly, yearly, and two-year pricing options. However, the higher-tier Plus and Max plans don’t add features to the VPN itself. Instead, they include additional tools like a password manager and end-to-end file encryption. We only reviewed the Standard plan and PureVPN’s core features, so we didn’t test these additional tools.

User-friendly

PureVPN is generally easy to use when it functions properly, but the frequent lag and occasional crashes on the Windows client diminish its user experience. The app’s interface is cluttered with advertisements for add-ons and related products, including a tab for the PureKeep password manager and another for inviting users to the service. While these ads don’t appear in critical areas like the server list or settings, they add unnecessary visual clutter.

Servers and Locations

PureVPN offers over 6,000 servers in more than 80 locations, which is respectable for a mid-level VPN. It also has dedicated P2P servers and shortcuts for specific streaming services that open a new tab and connect to the appropriate server when clicked. However, as we’ll discuss later, PureVPN often struggles to successfully access region-locked content, which undermines the usefulness of these shortcuts.

Speed and Performance

PureVPN supports several VPN protocols:

• Internet Key Exchange Version 2 (IKEv2): IKEv2 is a protocol that encrypts communication between a VPN client and server, securely exchanging keys over the internet. Despite being a standard for years, it has known vulnerabilities, especially when poorly implemented.

• OpenVPN (TCP): OpenVPN is a free, open-source protocol widely used in the VPN industry since its release in 2001. Using the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), it ensures data packets are delivered reliably, though this can slow down performance.

• OpenVPN (UDP): This version of OpenVPN uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP), which does not wait for packet delivery confirmation, making it faster but less reliable than TCP.

• WireGuard: Known for its speed and consistency, WireGuard is a free, open-source protocol that has become the current standard for many VPNs, often serving as the default protocol.

Privacy and Security

Aside from concerns about its no-logs policy (detailed below), PureVPN generally provides comparable safety to other popular VPNs. However, its Linux client has recently been found to have multiple vulnerabilities, including DNS leaks and remote code execution issues. Due to these concerns, we do not recommend PureVPN for Linux users at this time.

However, doubts remain due to a past incident in 2017 when PureVPN provided user data to the FBI during a cyberstalking investigation. This history raises concerns about its trustworthiness, especially for users prioritizing data privacy.

Multifactor Authentication  

PureVPN includes multifactor authentication (MFA) in its standard package, using an authenticator app. This method is common, along with email or SMS verification.

Streaming

PureVPN struggled with bypassing region locks for streaming. Despite having dedicated server shortcuts for services like Hulu, Max, and Netflix, none provided access. The same issue occurred with manual attempts to access Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+. Combined with its average speed, this makes PureVPN a less viable option for streaming.

Customer Support

PureVPN provides 24/7 live chat and email support. During our review, we tested the live chat feature by inquiring about the app’s kill switch settings. Although we were initially screened by a chatbot, the customer support agent was able to provide the necessary information promptly and answer our follow-up questions effectively.

Final Thoughts

PureVPN offers strong unblocking capabilities, a wealth of features, and attractive starter deals. However, issues with DNS leaks and other problems in the Windows OpenVPN app prevent it from competing with top-tier VPNs. Despite this, it remains a solid option, especially for budget-conscious users looking to access Netflix and other streaming services. With ongoing improvements and appealing two-year plan prices, now might be a good time to take advantage of its value.
